Baccarat is one of the most straightforward casino card games, played between the Player and the Banker. The objective is simple: achieve a hand value closest to nine. Each card carries specific point values—number cards are worth their face value, face cards and tens equal zero, and aces count as one.
The game begins with two cards dealt to both the Player and Banker hands. Hand values are calculated by totaling card points and taking the last digit of the sum. For example, a hand of 7 and 8 totals 15, which counts as 5 in baccarat terms. This mathematical principle is fundamental to understanding all baccarat variations.
Dealing Rules and Third Card Logic
Baccarat follows strict drawing rules that eliminate player discretion. If either the Player or Banker holds a natural eight or nine on their initial two cards, no additional cards are drawn—this hand wins immediately. For values of six or seven, the hand stands. For values of zero through five, the Player must draw a third card. The Banker's draw decisions depend on the Player's third card value and specific mathematical thresholds, creating a structured probability framework.
